The question going into this summer will be what Everton should do about the right back position. While it is clear that Seamus Coleman is not the answer anymore, it is still unclear what direction the club will go. Dijibril Sidibe has been playing well, but the question remains whether if they can keep him or if they should keep him because of some inconsistent play. Then there is the question about Jonjoe Kenny, which this article is about.
Kenny has been out on loan for Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga this season and has been very impressive. While the Bundesliga isn't quite as physical as the Premier League, the transition back into the league shouldn't be an issue. Kenny has been long looked at as one of the top young players to come through the youth system for Everton who would one day lead the team to glory. Problem was that he was not getting enough playing time at the senior level and a loan spell was needed. Now, Kenny will have a chance as right back looks to be a position that will be up for grabs to start and he would likely have to battle Sidibe for that role.
However, recently Kenny has expressed that he would rather stay at Schalke than come back to Everton, which may suggest he wants out. That might be easier said than done as Schalke has expressed that paying for the amount of money the Blues would want might be too expensive for them. The only way for Kenny to return to Schalke would likely have to be another loan spell.
Another factor to consider is the Sidibe situation. Sidibe is on loan from Monaco and has impressed both the Toffees and Monaco, but Monaco also has a competition going on at the right back position suggesting they may not want to keep him. Everton has to spend £12.5 million on retaining Sidibe's services permanently, which seems to be a worthy investment, but would it be worth it if Kenny comes back and starts?
Marcel Brands and Carlo Ancelotti will have lots to talk about once it's time to talk about the 2020-21 season after this one ends as there will be a lot of business decisions some who would not be envious doing. However, decisions will be made as this is quite the conundrum for the club and deciding whether Sidibe or Kenny is more worth the investment is not an easy one. It all depends on a lot of factors.
