White Sox Offseason Needs: Second Base, Stop Gap Edition

This is the second part of a three part series that talks about an offseason need for the White Sox. In this series, it will be talked about how the Pale Hose will need to fill the need of second base in 2020. For the second part of this series, it will talk about the stop gap options and who are the options that fit best. This does not mean they will go this direction, but it is an option. Let's take a look at some players the club will take into consideration if they go the stop gap route.

Danny Mendick

Here's the thing, whoever is the stop gap option will only hold down this job for a couple of weeks as they will hold it for whenever Madrigal gets promoted. That being said, Mendick is a great option as he can play multiple positions and he has pop in his bat. Mendick also runs the bases well as well as draws lots of walks. His defense is exceptional as well. For the few weeks that he would hold down the job before Madrigal's, he should do an admirable job. That being said, he's an excellent player to have on the bench.

Yolmer Sanchez

So technically he is not even on the roster as he is a free agent, but that doesn't necessarily mean he won't return, though that is unlikely. That being said, for a couple of weeks, it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing to have him man the position until Madrigal comes up. Sanchez won a Gold Glove in 2019, so you know what to expect from him with his glove. The bat though? He was not that productive in 2019 so the Sox will probably not expect much. He also is worth $6 Million, that's too much money for a player producing the way he does. Sanchez' best bet is to catch on with a new team for a bench role unless he is willing to accept less money for the Sox.

Leury Garcia

Garcia had a breakout campaign for the Sox in 2019 even though he was playing in centerfield. Garcia can play multiple positions and offers being a pretty solid bench player. That being said, he is more than capable of holding down the second base position for a few weeks before Madrigal's promotion. He also is valuable in pinch running situations.

Most likely to start: Mendick. Garcia might take a crack at it and Sanchez is very unlikely to return to the Sox, but Mendick provides the best option at second before Madrigal is promoted.
