White Sox Offseason Needs: Right Field, Free Agent Edition

In this third and final series of Positional Needs: Right Field, we take a look at free agent options to fill that need in the offseason. This isn't a guaranteed route the White Sox will take during the offseason, but this article will look into what the team might do if they do go that way. That being said, let's take a look at some of the options the Sox will look at in the free agency market.

Nicholas Castellanos

Castellanos used to play for division rival Detroit, but after being traded to the Cubs, the old White Sox killer won't have to hurt the Pale Hose any more. But that old saying of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" might be the right choice here as signing him for his services could be a game changer for the club. While he won't be a high-priced free agent, he is a productive hitter that provides at least average defense. Signing a player like Castellanos shows how dedicated the club is to putting a winner out there.

Kole Calhoun (Club Option for 2020)

Calhoun is not likely to go on the market, but a player like Calhoun would be an excellent find for the Sox. Another low cost player, he's a good hitter with an excellent arm in right field. If he somehow does not return to the Angels, he is one player that the Sox should heavily pursue.

Nick Markakis (Club Option for 2020)

Markakis might not be the same player he once was, but he is still a good defender and is a veteran player who could help provide some leadership to a young team. While he is in an option year, the Braves might not retain him because they might want to go younger. However, he might be just be a perfect addition to the team because of the reasons given despite his age.

Yasiel Puig

Puig is a five tool player who is very exciting to watch, but he really hasn't played to his full potential. That might be because of his behavior and not trying as hard as he can. However, when he is playing up to his potential, he is easily the best on the field. That being said, the Sox might be hesitant to sign him because of his antics despite his talents.

Lonnie Chisenhall

Chisenhall had played with the Cleveland Indians for a long time, so the Sox have some familiarity with him. Of all the players on here, he might be the least sought after, but he is a solid player. Not outstanding, but an admirable player with his bat. He is unlikely to sign with the club except maybe on a one year stop gap contract.

Gerardo Parra

If the club wants an outstanding defensive player, Parra is the man they want. While he has a somewhat productive bat, he lacks power. The Sox should not be sacrificing power for defense as they already have some players are going to be outstanding defensively and their lack of run production is subpar. That being said, Parra might be a nice stop gap signing.

Starling Marte (Club Option for 2020)

Marte might be a free agent this offseason as the Pittsburgh Pirates might not retain him as there is an option and he's another player who hasn't lived up to his potential. When he plays at his best, he really can help drive a team and did help the Pirates make the playoffs a few years ago. However, a change of scenery might be needed. Whether the Sox will look at him remains to be seen.

Cameron Maybin

Maybin has been a journeyman player in his career and could be a nice player for the Sox, but honestly, he's not a splash signing. This isn't a move the Sox should make if they want to please the fan base unless they are already a strong contender. That being said, he would be good depth or he might be a stop gap option if the club is dedicated to making Micker Adolfo their right fielder of the future.

Adam Jones

Like Markakis, Jones is a veteran player who will bring a lot of experience and leadership, but unlike Markakis, Jones is still productive at the plate. Jones would be an outstanding player for the Sox and should be highly sought after by the Sox. He might not be the high priced free agent the fans wants the team to go after, but Jones would make an excellent pickup.

Corey Dickerson

Dickerson has had an excellent career, but this last season he has struggled with his bat. Sox fans have clamored for trying to sign him this offseason and there's good reason why, but with this past season, the Sox might be hesitant. However, him playing at Guaranteed Rate Field might be the setting he needs to succeed in.

Marcell Ozuna

Ozuna is the best player on this list as he is consistently putting up great numbers. He also has an awesome arm as he can anywhere in the outfield. One concerning part of his game is he strikes out a lot, but his power and arm should make up for that. Ozuna is also a Scott Boras client, so the Sox will have to play hardball with Boras as he is a very difficult negotiator. However, if the Sox can sign him, he would be that big signing that fans have always been wanting.

Most likely to be the starter: Jones. Sure, Ozuna would be great and if the Sox and Boras can get a deal done, they should go after him, but Jones seems like the perfect fit for this club in a rebuild. Castellanos could also be a nice signing as well, but Jones has the leadership and experience to help a young team.
