The White Sox have made another great deal as they have given Yoan Moncada a contract extension. Moncada signs a five year, $70 million contract with a club option for 2025. Moncada will receive a $4 million signing bonus, $1 million in 2020, $6 million in 2021, $13 million in 2022, $17 million in 2023 and $24 million in 2024 as the team decided to backload the contract during it's window of contention.
2019 was Moncada's breakout year after deciding to change his approach at the plate and made the move from second base to third base. Moncada slashed .315/.367/.548 with 34 doubles, five triples, 25 home runs, 79 RBIs, 83 runs, and stole 10 bases in 132 games in 2019. His advanced numbers were a better indication of a type of player he was in 2019 as he had a .406 BABIP, .379 wOBA, and 141 wRC+ with also a 5.7 WAR. While some expect regression, Moncada is only 24 suggesting that he will have long-term success and could even get better.
This was the third extension this offseason the White Sox have made as they signed Luis Robert to a six-year, $50 million dollar contract and a five-year, $16 million deal to reliever Aaron Bummer. The team had given Eloy Jimenez a six-year, $43 million deal last year and Tim Anderson a six-year, $25 million extension in 2017. This means that the young core of this team will be around for a four year window, a window they feel like is where they can contend. This was just another excellent deal made by the White Sox and general manager Rick Hahn as they feel like these players will be key to their contention for the playoffs and locking them up long-term was in the best interest for the club.
