Looking At 2020 White Sox Non-Roster Invitees

Every spring training teams sign players for a chance to make the Opening Day roster and be key contributors to the club during the season. As this article will lay out, these are the players who will try and win a job with the White Sox come March 26th. While there are more players who are non-roster invitees here (like Nick Madrigal, who is fighting for a starting role, Gavin Sheets, Tyler Johnson, etc), this article will highlight the players who have Major League Baseball experience. Let's take a look at these players.

Drew Anderson

Anderson was a highly touted prospect in the Philadelphia Phillies system, but injuries have affected his ability to play in the Majors. He's got some good middle relief stuff, so there might be a spot for him in the bullpen.

Ross Detwiler

Detwiler had chances to pitch for the Sox in 2019 and was less than impressive. He provides depth and could be a nice bullpen arm/spot starter. He is unlikely to make it to Opening Day.

Adalberto Mejia

Mejia is an interesting case. He pitched poorly in 2019, but was once a heralded prospect in the Los Angeles Angels. If he can pitch to his potential, he would be a very solid pitcher in the bullpen. He would be depth, but he's a pitcher to keep an eye on this spring as the Sox see something in him.

Andrew Romine

Romine has been a serviceable player in his career at the major league level. However, he's not a world burner either as his batting abilities are bleak. That being said, he is a versatile player who plays all over the field and provides depth. He would seem like a good candidate for the 26th man spot, but his offense hurts his chances.

Matt Skole

Skole had some good moments in 2019, but he is not a highly thought of player. He had his chances last season, but it showed that he probably is not capable of being an everyday player in the majors. He does, however, provide depth.

Jaycob Brugman

Brugman is also another player who has not had a lot of success in the majors. He's had chances to stick in the majors after having some impressive numbers in the minors, but that success has not translated. He's a good fielder, but his bat is questionable.

Cheslor Cuthbert

Cuthbert is an interesting case as he is a versatile player and has some success with his bat when he played with the Kansas City Royals. His familiarity with the American League Central could be key for a bench role. It will be interesting to see if he makes the team or not out of camp.

Nicky Delmonico

Delmonico was once a heralded prospect who has a high upside for a bench bat. He's played with the Sox for the better part of three seasons, but was injured last year. He has a great chance to prove this year that he should be on the bench for 2020.

Daniel Palka

This is essentially Palka's last chance to make the team, but with an abysmal 2019, his chances are slim. He is clearly not a quality major league player, but one particular skill set is what keeps him around: his power. He can hit a ball a country mile, but will that help him nab a spot on the bench?
