Who Will Take Nomar Mazara's Spot On White Sox Opening Day Roster?

With Nomar Mazara being placed on the 10-day injured list, the White Sox will have to find another player to replace him until he has recovered. It was reported that he is sick, so one could conclude that the reason he is on the injured list is because of Covid-19, but that is not confirmed. That being said, this will give an opportunity to another player to contribute. This article will follow off the projected roster article that was written earlier this week.

If the projected Opening Day roster was read by some while also reading this one, you'd see some of the names who were left out. It wasn't easy deciding on whom to leave off the roster, but those players will likely contribute at some point this season. With that being said, let's take a look at those names.

Ian Hamilton

Hamilton is still recovering from injuries, but he would seem to be a front runner for the last spot. Hamilton was seen to be a future contributor in the bullpen and that's what he will likely be. He throws hard and has the ability to pitch multiple innings, so there's versatility there. Plus, in that projection, only two pitchers were selected, so getting another one will help.

Tayron Guerrero

Guerrero is another strong candidate to take that final spot as, just like Hamilton, the team could use another bullpen arm. Guerrero possesses some electric stuff as he throws the high heat and that could come useful in late inning situations. He looked good in intrasquad games, so you could see him get a chance. Guerrero was waived by the Miami Marlins and picked up by the White Sox, so he could get a chance to work with pitching coach Don Cooper to see if he can harness his potential.

Ross Detwiler

Detwiler was another strong candidate to make the club out of Spring Training because of his ability to spot start, long relief, and be a left handed matchup pitcher. Detwiler did not have a good 2019, but he still provides some value. With durability and versatility, he might have a good shot at winning that last spot.

Jimmy Lambert

Lambert is another intriguing prospect as he can both start and be a reliever. While he is not overpowering, he possesses some good stuff that could make him an effective pitcher in the majors. His durability gives him a good chance at making the club. Like Hamilton, he is recovering from injuries, but that shouldn't prohibit him from making the team.

Andrew Romine

Romine is an interesting player as he basically is the epitome of a utility player being able to play anywhere in the field. That would be good depth to have on any ball club. While his bat is suspect, his fielding abilities give him a good chance at playing for the team.

Cheslor Cuthbert

Cuthbert is an experienced player who had played for division rival Kansas City Royals. He can play anywhere in the infield and has some pop. He could come useful coming off the bench as his pop and versatility are desirable. Plus having experience always helps having on the bench.

It would seem more likely to see a pitcher selected here as the White Sox have plenty of options to fill in at right field while Mazara is out. This also all, but guarantees a spot for Nicky Delmonico. So with this final roster spot, it would seem that the most likely candidate is Hamilton, but don't be surprised if Guerrero earns it over him. Lambert also is a good bet too.
