The White Sox have signed utility man Leury Garcia to a one-year contract extension for $3.50 million. The deal also includes an option for 2021. He had originally signed a $3.25 million contract through arbitration in January.
Garcia had a career year in 2019 after slashing .279/.310/.378 with eight home runs, 40 RBIs, 15 stolen bases, and 93 runs scored, which led the team. While he is currently battling for a starting position out of Spring Training, he will be a useful bench player with position versatility and speed. It is likely he will be the starting second baseman out of camp until the Sox' top second baseman prospect Nick Madrigal is promoted at some point during the season unless Madrigal wins the job at the end of Spring Training.
