The White Sox have made another massive move as they have signed an extension with their top prospect Luis Robert. The contract is for six-years, $50 million. The deal also includes two $20 million team options (or $1 million buyouts) that could stretch through Robert's age-29 season and push the total value of the deal to $88 million. This move suggests that he will be on the Opening Day roster in 2020.
The 22 year old tore up the minor leagues in 2019 has he hit .328/.376/.624 with 32 home runs, 92 RBIs, and stole 36 bases. Robert is a five tool player and is likely to be the everyday centerfielder for the Sox. His contract will also be back loaded as the team feels like the window for contention is now and it gives them more money to spend in this window.
His abilities were never questioned, but with the amount of talent the White Sox now have, where will Robert hit in the lineup? Some have suggested at the top of the order or even somewhere in the middle (and yes, some have even said towards the bottom, but that's outrageous). He will also make the defense in the outfield significantly better as he provides a significant upgrade over Leury Garcia who spent the most time in center field in 2019. Robert has the ability of becoming an MVP in the league and should help the White Sox get a chance at winning a championship or more.
