White Sox Re-Sign Jose Abreu and James McCann

The White Sox have made other moves to show how serious they are about the future of their team as they have re-signed Jose Abreu and James McCann. While it was pretty much a foregone conclusion these two would be back, it was interesting to see what type of contracts they would get. It also helps solidify the roster more.

Abreu signed a three-year, $50 million contract as he will be under team control until 2022. While he will be 33 when the season starts, Abreu will be coming off a monstrous 2019 season where he won the RBI crown. He slashed .284/.330/.503 while hitting 33 home runs and driving in 123 RBIs and earning a 2.4 WAR for the season. His runners in scoring position hitting actually suggests he was more valuable than what his WAR suggested as he slashed .337/.368/.590 with a 141 wRC+. His power hitting bat will come useful as a DH, but expect him to get some time at first base.

James McCann broke out last season as he slashed .273/.328/.460 with 18 home runs and drove in 60 runs and that in result earned him a contract for one-year and worth $5.4 million, which actually doubles his salary from what he earned in 2019. He had a monstrous first half in 2019 which earned him an All-Star nod as he slashed .316/.371/.502. However, in the second half, it was a different story as he hit .226/.281/.413. That being said, with possibly a reduced amount of at bats and the ability to rotate at designated hitter and catcher, his numbers should stabilize in 2020 as he provides a quality back up to Yasmani Grandal.
