This is the first part of a three part series that talks about an offseason need for the White Sox. In this series, it will be talked about how the Pale Hose will need to fill the need of second base in 2020. For the first part of this series, it will talk about the internal options from the minor leagues and who are the options that fit best. This does not mean they will go this direction, but it is an option. Let's take a look at some players the club will take into consideration if they go the internal route.
Nick Madrigal
Madrigal is going to be the starting second baseman of the future and that future will come at some point in 2020. He was the White Sox first round draft pick in 2018, but lots of scouts have raved about his hitting tools despite his small frame. But he also is very good defensively (won the Minor League Gold Glove award) and runs the bases really well. Madrigal barely strikes out and draws lots of walks, which makes him a very ideal player to have at the top of the lineup. It's not a question of if, it's a question of when Madrigal will become the full-time starter in 2020. There's a lot to like about him too.
Mitch Roman
Roman is a defensive wizard who is also versatile, which is very attractive to have at second base, however, after starting in Birmingham, he struggled at the plate and was demoted to Winston-Salem. Roman had more success in Winston-Salem, but never made it back to Birmingham. Roman is a long shot here.
Amado Nunez
Nunez is a highly regarded prospect for the Sox who is also another long shot to make the team. His numbers at Kannapolis were not stellar, but expect him to make strides in 2020. His biggest issue is his defense, so he is an even bigger long shot than Roman at this point.
Most likely to be the starter: Madrigal. This one was a really a no-brainer. Madrigal is the future for the Sox at second base. Why would it be any other internal option?
