The Redskins hold the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and there's still a lot of talk as to what they will do with it. In this article, it will be looked at what the Redskins should do with the pick as there's plenty of options here. Ultimately it comes down to what the front office wants to do, but here are some options that the Redskins can make with second pick of the draft.
Trade it
So, lots of fans have clamored for this to happen and actually, it's not a bad idea. However, the problem here is that it needs to be executed right. Holding a draft pick this high is a golden ticket (first overall is platinum, but lets not get into semantics), so, if you want to trade it, you need a lot back in return. A team with two first round draft picks sounds nice to trade to, but is that enough? Depending on what the team could get back, it's not a bad idea, but it has to be for the right price and what that might be is hard to decide on.
Draft cornerback Jeff Okudah
Okudah is a shut down cornerback from Ohio State and undoubtedly the top prospect in this draft at his respective position and a top five player overall. The Redskins has a defense that has the potential to be one of the best and adding an elite cornerback to pair with Kendall Fuller sounds intriguing, especially with Quinton Dunbar being traded to the Seattle Seahawks. He's a speedy guy and reads routes well, he might be the next big thing at cornerback.
Draft an offensive tackle
There are four tackles in this draft who would bring a lot if they were drafted and with how the Trent Williams conundrum playing out the way it is, this might not be a bad idea. The Redskins have a hole to fill at interior lineman, but that can be taken cared of later in the draft, free agency, or through trade. Offensive tackles provide a lot of value as evidenced by what Trent Williams has meant to the Redskins since 2010. The three best here are Mekhi Becton, Tristan Wirfs, Jedrick Wills, and Andrew Thomas and those guys would be great additions, but whether needing to draft an offensive tackle at number two, or even at all, seems a bit risky.
Draft Isaiah Simmons
Wow, this kid oozes so much athleticism it's fun to think what he could become in the league. Not only that, he's incredibly versatile as he can play outside and inside linebacker, both safety positions, and even slot cornerback. That's a good type of player to have on your team. However, he is not an impact player despite his versatility. Having his versatility sounds nice, however, there really isn't a need for a player like him.
Draft Chase Young
Undoubtedly the best prospect in the draft, it's almost highway robbery that he is likely to fall to the second pick in this draft, right into the team's lap, because the Cincinnati Bengals are very much likely to pick quarterback Joe Burrow with the number one overall pick. That being said, this player is the real deal as he was dominant and the best defensive player in college football in 2019, he is truly an impact player that no one should pass up on. While the Redskins already have a pretty good defensive line already, having Young there would make this the best in the league as him, Jonathan Allen, Matt Ioannidis, Tim Settle, Ryan Kerrigan, Jordan Brailford, Montez Sweat, and Daron Payne would give any offensive line headaches and give quarterbacks nightmares. He is strong and very quick. This kid is so good the reason why he wasn't putting up good numbers towards the end of the 2019 season was that he was getting triple teamed. That's how good he is.
What should the Redskins do:
Draft Chase Young. This one should be pretty obvious, but no one can pass up on an impact player like Young simply because there isn't much of a need for defensive line, he is a once in a generation type player who could become potentially the best defensive player in the league. Young could become the next Reggie White or even Aaron Donald. Having a defensive line, like mentioned earlier, that could be that devastating, can make a huge impact, especially with the change to the 4-3 defense. It would be explosive, hard to contain, and also is very deep. Lots of Redskins fans have been clamoring for Simmons because of his versatility, which is nice, but how many of the best defenses the league has ever seen had versatile players? Point exactly. With a player that strong, quick, and explosive on the defensive line, on this team, you're looking at something special.
