Now with Everton finally able to find someone to replace Carlo Ancelotti, Rafael Benitez will be at the helm to lead the Blues. There were many names thrown in the ring including one that was a done deal, but Benitez eventually has been handed the reigns. While he has experience managing in a top flight league, the question remains: was this the right hire?
Regardless of opinions, Benitez is the manager and that's how it is. Benitez does have a winning track record including Champions League, but past achievements don't always equate to future success. While the club could have made some other hire that would've pleased more fans, Benitez will lead the Blues in 2021-22.
The problem with this hire is it really doesn't inspire any confidence. He's conservative with his play and he will get the team points in the table, but there's nothing about his style that makes fans excited. It doesn't seem aggressive nor does it seem inspiring enough. This is a fanbase that is craving some hardware and getting a manager like Benitez doesn't seem ambitious enough.
The club could've hired Christophe Galtier or Nuno Espirito Santo, two managers who would've sent a message to the fanbase about how serious they were about winning some trophies. Galtier was very intriguing and might've been the best option and Nuno has shown the type of success he can bring like what he did with Wolves. It just seemed like an easy decision to make. However, Everton eventually went with Benitez and that was met with a lot of anger.
Benitez' style should at least keep the team away from relegation as he plays to earn points, but it doesn't like it will bring any confidence to the fanbase. Now, the hope is that Benitez will prove everyone wrong and does bring success and trophies, but it certainly doesn't seem very inspiring. The best way to categorize this hire is it's a safe one and also wasn't necessarily a bad appointment, but is it the right decision? While it's way too early to tell, it certainly doesn't feel like it. Let's just hope Benitez proves all the naysayers wrong. Everton's form of late has been poor after having a good start. Whether that reflects Benitez is a question only Benitez can answer, but it might be the one supporters feared.
