The Redskins Are 0-3, Now What?

After an embarrassing loss on Monday night to the Chicago Bears despite a late rally, the Redskins are now 0-3. I had predicted that the team would go 9-7, but I also recognized that it was a tough start to the season and potentially saw this as a possibility to start the season. That being said, this is a bad start to the season regardless.

Head Coach Jay Gruden might have some mulligans on his resume as there were some promising seasons lost to injuries, but unless the injuries happen again, Gruden is likely on his last legs with the team. Sometimes a change is needed even if a coach is not totally to blame, but this is a situation where no team could come back. And if Gruden does not win on Sunday against the New York Giants, consider Gruden fired.

Four of their first five games this season were against playoff teams including the defending champions, New England Patriots, so it is not an easy schedule to start the season for the Redskins. That being said, there were warning signs with how the season would go after the loss to Philadelphia to start the season as they lost a big lead to the Eagles and eventually the game. When Philadelphia had the momentum, Gruden never adjusted his game plan on offense which resulted in continuous three and outs and that made their defense gassed. Even when he did adjust in the recent game against the Bears, it was too little too late. Sure, Chicago's defense is rock solid and a win might not have seen unlikely, but the Redskins were never really in the game despite a late rally which saw them grab much needed momentum. If they can build off that late momentum for their game with New York, that's a good sign.

The Giants are not a very good team and have a rookie quarterback starting, despite leading his team to victory last week. If the Redskins cannot win this week against a weak opponent, then it should be considered to fire Gruden. I personally think Gruden should have a chance to show what he is capable of by trying to salvage the season as the last two seasons were just unlucky for any head coach to go through, but if he cannot, the team should make a change once the season is over.
