The Catchers The White Sox Should Pursue At Trade Deadline

It is no secret that an upgrade at catcher is needed for the White Sox. With Kyle Teel down with an injury, Edgar Quero struggling in almost every facet of the game, and less said about Drew Romo the better, it's an obvious need at the trade deadline. The question that remains is whom should the front office go out and acquire. Let's take a look at some candidates.

Tyler Stephenson

Stephenson is an instant upgrade as he has 72 career home runs along with 290 RBIs. He's already an established player in the league and with his pending free agency, it makes sense to trade for him. Stephenson might not be the strongest hitter, his defense will be a plus as he's in the 99th percentile in blocked pitches which essentially means there will be less wild pitches or passed balls thus making the pitchers more comfortable throwing to him. Trading for him could also package Brady Singer as that checks off two boxes.

Adley Rutschman

Rutschman was seen as a future star when he was a prospect and is a three time All Star, but lately it seems like he isn't meeting the hype quite like when debuting in the majors. That being said, a change of scenery could be whats best for Rutschman. He is a switch hitter and does provide some pop in the bat. While for the most part, Rutschman is a solid fielding catcher, but he isn't outstanding. However, if Rutschman does need a change of scenery and he hits well for the Sox, this would be great.

Liam Hicks

Hicks has been a breakout star for Miami as he has exploded to hit 14 home runs just as a designated hitter and catcher split. Hicks also would be controllable as he has four years left on his contract, which could be useful as a trade chip for something in the offseason. However, Hicks isn't great defensively which could hurt the Sox more rather than how much his bat helps. Hicks would still be an upgrade regardless.

Carson Kelly

Kelly would be the next best option as a rental option, but he is still a solid player and already an upgrade regardless what happens. Kelly is solid offensively and that already is an upgrade, but at age 32, there are some problems in another area, defense. His fielding percentage isn't very good, however Kelly has caught roughly 25 percent of would be base stealers. Either way, Kelly is still an upgrade.
