South Side Column: The Continuing Youth Movement

This rebuild feels a bit different being a White Sox fan. The last one had a ton of potential, but we all clearly know how that went. This one though, it seems like that this front office run by Chris Getz, actually knows how to develop a great farm system and identify talent. With the influx of young talent these last two seasons, you're seeing the fruits of the labor and the crazy part is, there's a lot more coming.
The hiring of Getz as the guy to run the baseball operations for the Pale Hose was deservedly controversial. Lot's of Sox fans probably thought "You decided to hire a guy who has limited experience to run this front office?!" There was one executive that fans clamored for and rightfully so as they are a brilliant baseball mind and that person is Kim Ng. She had just constructed a team that made the playoffs in 2023 and things were looking up for the franchise until she decided to leave (seemingly because of meddling). Once Getz got hired, he went to work and started bringing in a lot of people who seemed to know what they were doing. Getz clearly had a vision and developed a plan once bringing in these brilliant baseball minds. While technically not an outside hire, when Getz hired all these executives, it could be seen as one.
Lets forget 2024, that was brutal. Getz tore down the team completely and 2024 resulted in what it was. However, 2025 was the beginning of the transition to a new era in White Sox baseball. I had initially written a column about what this youth movement would be (still in my drafts and will never be published) last year, but with how things have changed in the last year, I have to write something completely different. The team called up players like Chase Meidroth, Edgar Quero, Kyle Teel, Grant Taylor, Tim Elko (he didn't perform well in the majors and is currently injured, but there's potential with him), Wikelman Gonzalez, Mike Vasil, Shane Smith, and of course Colson Montgomery in 2025. Also in 2025 was the development of young talent such as Miguel Vargas, Sean Burke, Jonathan Cannon, Jordan Leasure, Korey Lee, and Brooks Baldwin. In 2026 though, it showed that there is going to be some really good players coming in to make a big impact. Players such as David Sandlin, Sam Antonacci, Jacob Gonzalez, Rikuu Nishida, Noah Schultz, Tyler Schweitzer, Duncan Davitt, and Tyler Davis making their debuts is huge, but nothing quite as big as the headline signing of Munetaka Murakami as he has been destroying baseballs before his injury. There's also been some development of Everson Pereira and Drew Romo. What is also crazy is some of the players on the injured list who are also young talent that could contribute such as Ky Bush, Prelander Berroa, Tanner Murray, and Drew Thorpe. Noticing a pattern here?
Then there is next wave of players who are waiting to come up and make their debuts. Some names like Hagen Smith, Ben Peoples, Tanner McDougal, William Bergolla, Braden Montgomery, and Shane Murphy are going to be next guys who will be knocking on the door at some point this season. Next season, there will be players such as Jeral Perez, Caleb Bonemer, Billy Carlson, Jaden Fauske, Kyle Lodise, Mason Adams, George Wolkow, Mathias LaCombe, Gabe Davis, Ryan Burrowes, and Javier Mogollon who will be doing the same. Again, noticing a pattern?
I keep asking that same question, but what is great is that the Pale Hose actually have some depth here and a lot of talented depth. The next man up mentality is here and it's a weird position to be in. The cool thing about it is that if a certain prospect is a bust at the majors or need a trade chip when trying to acquire some player to help contribute to be a future World Series contender, then there is another guy there who can step up if needed. It feels like the Sox are set up for success for a long time. Whether they become a dynasty is a different question to ask next year, but as a contender? I think we're seeing it now especially as they are now in a playoff position. I haven't even delved deep into how much depth there is in the farm system as especially the draft hasn't even happened yet. What also is crazy is there is such a logjam of players and what that means is lots of players won't be contributors for the Sox once they become contenders. The question is who will those players be.
If these results continue, you as fans are going to see a very exciting era on the South Side. The Sox need to continue to stockpile their farm system in order to stay competitive for the foreseeable future. Yes, graduations and trades will weaken farm systems, but with the right baseball minds, you can continue to have that depth while being very competitive. It seems like Getz and his people are trying to do that. Rankings aside, those are subjective and you have to trust the process. Yes, us Pale Hose fans have gone through a lot and rightfully can feel pessimistic, but this should bring some optimism. Notice how every player who is coming up is making an impact? Notice how the team is suddenly playing well? That's a sign and if this a sign, then we could see, not only the best era of franchise since the 50's-60's, but possibly ever.
