Rock The Red Column: Savor Watching His Gr8ness

Sorry for the title of the column. Yeah, it's a little cheesy, but just go with it. Aside from how ridiculous the title of the column might be, it is trying to send a message that not just only Capitals fans need to savor, but all fans of the sport. We are watching something that probably will never be broken and it's hard to look away from history. We as Caps fans know what Alex Ovechkin has meant to this team, us fans, and the city, but he has also been great for the NHL.

With him breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal record, everyone involved in the sport are witnessing an unbelievable achievement. A record that once seemed so untouchable is now broken. There was a period when Ovechkin started slowing down and struggled mightily (which comes with age obviously) making it seem look less likely. Then suddenly the last couple of seasons, Ovechkin has had a resurgence almost capturing the same level of production when he was in his prime.

It's clear and obvious that Ovechkin will get to 900 goals. What isn't known is how many goals he will score by the time he retires. If he maintains this level of production for a few more seasons, who knows how many goals will be scored. Another burning question is how much does Ovechkin have left in the tank until he finally retires? Ovechkin seemingly has enough in him to go for a while that he could go for another 2-5 years. Hockey is a very taxing sport and whether Ovechkin wants to continue to put that amount of stress and hits on his body is going to be a big question going forward.

Despite reaching an "untouchable" mark, we as fans need to savor this moment at all cost. Unless there is some young player out there waiting for a chance to be noticed by scouts and can score 70 goals a year when they make the NHL, we will never see a player quite like Ovechkin ever again and it will hands down be a record that will never be touched. This is historic, this is greatness, this is something none of us will ever witness ever again. We as Caps fans are so lucky and blessed that we can call him our legend, but really is now the greatest goal scorer of all time in the sport. Savor every moment of this. Sometimes witnessing history will always imprint itself in our memories so vividly.
