Redskins Sign Offensive Lineman Corey Robinson

In the midst of the Trent Williams saga, the Redskins signed offensive tackle Corey Robinson. The reason behind signing Robinson is intriguing as he was signed right before Donald Penn, but now with Penn on the team, the question will be what will Robinson's role be in 2019 if any at all. He will be one player to watch this preseason to see how he does and what he will mean to the squad.

Robinson was a seventh round pick by the Detroit Lions in 2015 and played with them through 2017 before being traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2018. Robinson would later be released by Carolina and then was picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars later. In his career he has played in 28 games with nine starts.

So the question is what will be his role. When he was signed, some assumed that he might be competing for a starting role because of the Williams problem, but once Penn was signed, that changed the narrative. At this point he should be depth, something the offensive line needs especially seeing how injuries hurt the depth last season. Another is that with experience at playing either left or right tackle, he could be used as a swing tackle, a void left when Ty Nsekhe left to play for Buffalo this offseason.

Think of Robinson as an insurance policy, while it's a low risk there is a high reward here. Robinson isn't the most talented player, but expect him to be serviceable. This isn't a bad signing for the Redskins, but it won't turn any heads either. The only thing that will be interesting to see is what his role will be with the team.
