United States' group is a very intriguing, but certainly not an easy one. If the Americans had a better constructed roster and were in better form then this should be a cake walk, however this is a competitive group. USA is the expected favorite to win Group D, but there's a good chance they could finish second or even third. Finishing third could even still help the Americans advance to the knockout round, but their path for a deep run would be very difficult. With that being said, let's take a look at each side in this group.

Australia

Probably the best defensive side in the group, Australia is not going to be much of a threat in the attack as there isn't an elite goal scorer. However, if opposing defenses aren't careful then Australia has a brilliant counterattack and is solid at set pieces. The other problem is that they have a hard time controlling the ball when being pressured. The Socceroos might be the team that gives USA the most problems though with how physical they are. They'll frustrate the Americans with their defense and tire them out with their counterattack. Some players to keep an eye on are Ajdin Hrustic, Mat Leckie, Mathew Ryan, Milos Degenek, Mohamed Toure, and Jordan Bos. Australia does have a good chance to advance into the knockout round as well.

Paraguay

The Paraguayans have been a red hot side as they were able to beat some top teams in South America just to qualify for the World Cup. Paraguay might actually be the most physical side in this group which would make a very interesting matchup against Australia. It will certainly keep them in the game against the Americans. Just like Australia, Paraguay has an advantage when it comes to their set pieces. They are also aggressive defensively comparatively to Australia where the Socceroos are more structured and shut down the zone by being organized. So it will be a difficult matchup for the Americans in this game. Players to know from Paraguay are Miguel Almiron, Diego Gomez, and Omar Alderete. They'll certainly challenge Australia for third place, but the team had an advantage of playing in an environment they knew very well and took advantage, now they'll be playing on neutral ground. That might be the difference between advancing out of the group or finishing last in it.

Turkey

Turkey (or Turkiye) might be the biggest challengers to the Americans in this World Cup. In fact, some even think they might actually win Group D. Turkey has the perfect blend of talent whether it's in youth or in experience. Under manager Vincenzo Montella and his tactical brilliance, Turkey is getting the best out of the team. What also helps Turkey is some of the young stars on this roster such as Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz. Under Montella, they have a solid and organized defense and attack that has shown flashes of brilliance and balance. Turkey is one of the most exciting sides in this tournament, so don't be shocked that they keep it very tight and competitive against USA. Other players to watch are Hakan Calhanoglu, Ozan Kabak, and Salih Ozcan. The problem here is that Turkey relies too much on their youth and with all that inexperience, it could hurt them. However, it's hard to imagine Turkey not advancing to the knockout round.

Predicting The Group

  1. USA

  2. Turkey

  3. Australia

  4. Paraguay

While this will be a competitive group, it still seems like USA will win it. Manager Mauricio Pochettino is a great coach who has a knack to win the big games, but he also has a wealth of talented players on the team to win it. It won't be easy and there's still a good chance the Americans don't win the group, but after looking at each side, it's hard to imagine anyone else beating them. The group will most likely be decided by the USA-Turkey match, but it could also come down to another one that involves either Australia and/or Paraguay. That being said, USA should win this group.
