Looking At The Redskins: Defensive Backs

This is the eighth article of a series of nine looking at the Redskins' positions. The Redskins used to not have a very good defensive back unit, but now, they have a very talented one and experienced one. With some of the draft picks and free agent signings that the team has made over the years, they have built a very exciting bunch to cover opposing receivers.

Josh Norman

Norman is the star cornerback for the Redskins as he signed a massive contract a couple of seasons ago, and while there is a good argument about him being overpaid, he still is an excellent defensive back. Norman covers very well and reads offenses exceptionally. However, there are times he looks overmatched and that is a bit of concern.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

Rodgers-Cromartie is still playing in the league, but the hope is that he provides some veteran leadership in a very young crop of defensive backs. While he will provide some depth, he should also be a productive player as well. He is nowhere near the player he once was, but he still has a lot of value.

Quinton Dunbar

Dunbar has slowly become not only the best cornerback for the Redskins, but a top notch one in the league. Dunbar converted from wide receiver to cornerback and he keeps coming up with one big play after another. Last year he finally got the recognition he deserved for the type of player he is.

Jimmy Moreland

Moreland played for James Madison, a FCS school, which some people questioned whether he was prepared for the NFL or not. Well, Moreland really shut those people up as he had an excellent preseason as he impressed everyone. Just from what is seen of him, he is going to be an excellent cornerback for the Redskins. What a steal for the team.

Fabian Moreau

Moreau is a really good player. Sure his numbers might not say that he is a good player, but his presence is outstanding. His vision of the field is incredible and his football IQ is out of this world that it's a shock that his numbers aren't better. That being said, he is a really important player for the Redskins.

Landon Collins

Not only is Collins an Alabama alumni, he also grew up as a Redskins fan, which makes this a perfect fit for him. Collins is an outstanding safety who signed with the team during the offseason and he makes the defensive backs instantly better. It will be fun to see what he does with the squad.

Montae Nicholson

Nicholson is yet another draft pick that the team selected as they have done a good job of building quality depth. Nicholson is a very good safety who has put up some very good numbers and offers a presence on the field that not many can rival. Nicholson is gonna be a player people have to watch in 2019.

Troy Apke

There really isn't much to say about Apke as he is coming back from an injury and really didn't get a chance to prove himself as to how good he is, but here he is in 2019 with a chance to showcase his talent. He did play for a very good program in Penn State, so there is clearly some talent here. For now, Apke is depth.

Deshazor Everett

Everett has seemingly been around for what seems a very long time, but he has only been with the squad since 2015. While he has not been the lockdown defensive back as they hoped he could be, Everett still puts up an admirable effort. He also provides depth which is very helpful.

Simeon Thomas

Thomas was a late addition to the team as he was signed from the Seattle Seahawks practice squad, but the Redskins seem to think he is a talented enough player to play in the NFL. Right now he will be depth, but it will be interesting to see how they use him. This could be a really underrated pickup.

*Danny Johnson

Johnson made the team last year as an undrafted free agent and he possesses a lot of talent. While they were hoping for him to be healthy this year, he will miss the season with an injury.

*Greg Stroman

Stroman was a draft pick last year and was thought of as depth, but he is so much better than that. Just in terms of numbers, he put some good numbers in 2018. The hope is that he can develop into a better lock down defensive back where he can become as good as Dunbar. He was waived/injured, but he might be able to compete for a spot in 2020.
