Looking At The Capitals: Goalies

Braden Holtby

Holtby is a god amongst Capitals fans especially making such a miraculous save in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2018 which might have been moment that set the mood for the team to win the Cup. That being said, his nickname is "Holtbeast" and for good reason, he's superb manning the net. However, he is 30 and the least two seasons his save percentage has been well below his normal numbers which is a huge concern. While his 2018-19 was better than his horrendous 2017-18, it still should be a point of concern. If he can get back to his elite form, then the Capitals will be fine. If not? He will be splitting time.

Ilya Samsonov

Samsonov managed to beat out Pheonix Copley for the backup job, but having him be the backup might be beneficial for both the team and himself. Samsonov not only was the Caps' number one prospect, but he is seen as their future goalie once Holtby can no longer be the starter. He is only 22, so he has all the time in the world to study and get some experience before becoming the full-time starter. Plus he will be getting advice from Holtby and that's a good sign. That being said, if Holtby theoretically gets hurt, will he be a dependable starter?
