Looking At The Capitals: Defensemen

John Carlson

Carlson has been a rock solid player on the blue line and is a legitimate player. He is getting up there in age, but he is still productive as he is a great goal scorer. Carlson is also an effective defender as he can shutdown goalscorers. Carlson is also coming in as an Alternative Captain for the season, so clearly the Capitals feel confident of his leadership skills. Not having his presence would be a huge blow to the team's blue line.

Martin Fehervary

Fehervary is very young as he is 19 and was the Capitals' second round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. He has a left handed stick and will be depth for the team. He might develop into a top line defenseman. While he played well in the Swedish Hockey League, he is still a question mark as he is young and playing against some very experienced players in the league.

Radko Gudas

The team wanted to be more physical in 2019-20, so with that in mind the Caps traded beloved, but aging Matt Niskanen to the Philadelphia Flyers for Gudas. He is a bruising player as he is very physical. Gudas is also very dependable, so the team knows that they will get consistency from him. This is an under the radar type of acquisition.

Nick Jensen

The Capitals have a lot of high hopes for Jensen especially after they gave him a contract extension right after he was traded for from the Detroit Red Wings. He did struggle for the team after he was traded for, but it's a new season and he can show why he was acquired and be a great top-four defenseman. It will be interesting to see what comes out of him this season.

Michal Kempny

Kempny was a key piece on their blue line last season and in their Stanley Cup playoff run, but he sustained an injury before the playoffs, which might have been a big factor in why the Capitals lost their first round matchup with Carolina. The injury has carried on into this season and is on the injured non-roster to begin 2019-20. When healthy though, he is a legitimate top four defenseman. They will need him if the Capitals want to be a good defensive team.

Tyler Lewington

Lewington is an interesting prospect as he is a physical player and does a good job clearing out around the net, however he is merely depth at this point. Whether he will develop into a top-four defenseman is a big question, but for now, he will just be depth.

Dmitry Orlov

Orlov has been a mainstay on the Capitals blue line for a few seasons, but he has been a great player for them. His speed has also been a huge factor in his game as is his physicality. He is a legitimate top-four defenseman that most teams would love to have on their team.

Jonas Siegenthaler

Siegenthaler is an intriguing prospect as he is a great defensive player, but lacks the offensive production that you want from the position. The big question is whether he will develop into a top-four defenseman. It will be interesting to see what he does this season as he beat out Christian Djoos for the last spot on the team.
