It's Time For White Sox To Bring Up Zack Collins For Good

Updated: Aug 29, 2020

The AJ Reed experiment turned out to be a failure for the White Sox (even though I personally don't think they gave him enough of an opportunity). However, with Reed being optioned, there's a roster spot open and it comes into question of who will replace him. It's clear the team won't make the playoffs in 2019, so it might be wise to bring up a top prospect for him to get some experience in the Majors and to prepare him for next season when the team expects to become a playoff contender. That prospect should be Zack Collins.

The first time the Sox brought up Collins, the team really never gave him any at bats to prove himself. He played in nine games with 26 at bats, that's really nothing at all. He only had two hits (one for a home run), but that might be attributed to not having enough reps at the plate. For Charlotte, in 62 games played for them, he is hitting .271 with nine home runs and 52 RBIs and a staggering .390 on-base percentage.

The White Sox are also in a big time slump as their offense cannot get anything going since play resumed from the All-Star break. They need more thump in the lineup to get them going and they should bring up a big bat in Collins. Collins is part of the future, so it would make sense for him to get some consistent at bats. Offense from the designated hitter position has been laughable all season as the most productive player from that spot was Yonder Alonso, who was recently DFA'd.

Collins could theoretically struggle, but you want him to get the at bats in the majors to develop and even then he could excel. Collins could be the everyday DH and also get some starts at catcher every once in a while ideally if the Sox were to bring him up. Problem is that James Fegan of The Athletic is reporting that Matt Skole was scratched from the lineup in Charlotte and he expects them to call him up for their trip to Philadelphia. I don't like that at all and don't understand why Collins isn't getting the call up. He absolutely should be. This is the opportunity to do it. If not, then the next thing to do is to DFA Welington Castillo and have Collins replace him. At some point, they need to get him up and playing this year.
