FC Cincinnati Needs A Sense Of Urgency Now Or Fail To Make Playoffs

After the demoralizing loss to arch rival Columbus Crew this past Sunday, FC Cincinnati need some urgency in the final five matches of the season. The club holds the ninth and final playoff spot at 36 points, but there's a good chance they could miss the postseason. Heck, even getting a draw against the Crew would have helped the team's chances, but this loss hurts more than many might think.

If FC Cincinnati wants some urgency, then the next two matches should be where they need it. Eastern Conference foe D.C. United comes to the Queen City on Wednesday, but then FC Cincinnati travel to the Nation's Capital on Saturday. These two matches are going to be crucial for the club as after these two games, it's a gauntlet to end the season. FC Cincinnati essentially will need at least four to six points between the two matches against D.C. to put them in a good position to clinch a spot which could come down to the last day. D.C. United, on the other hand, will be fighting for a playoff spot as they are only three points short of the one FC Cincinnati currently holds. So, expect D.C. United to come out and fight and because of this, FC Cincinnati needs to step their game up and get ready for a team hungry for the playoffs. D.C. United does boast some talent as goalkeeper Sean Johnson is still an excellent shot stopper in Major League Soccer, plus attacking talent like Tai Baribo, so FC Cincinnati will need to handle those names.

After D.C. United, FC Cincinnati will have to face Inter Miami, Philadelphia Union, and Nashville SC. That's a gauntlet to face as these are the three of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. These clubs are going to be battling it out for high seeds in the playoffs and will be sending out their best players for that exact reason. FC Cincinnati has struggled against all three as they have conceded a collective 14 goals, while scoring three which came in one match (Inter Miami). FC Cincinnati has had a lot of defensive problems in 2026, so it's going to be a problem going against these clubs. Nashville has effectively clinched the top seed in the conference, so FC Cincinnati could get lucky with them resting their starters in the final match. If that is the case, then the two matches against D.C. United matter even more.

Finally, with things going down to the wire, looking at the race for the playoffs in the Eastern Conference is very tight. Yes, with FC Cincinnati holding the final spot, the club could theoretically earn a higher seed, though that will be difficult as the seven seed (Orlando City SC being that team) has 41 points. FC Cincinnati has to control their own path for them to even get to that point, so earning points on the table is more important right now. The club is tied with New York Red Bulls on the same amount of points, but because they have played less matches, New York has the advantage. Now, the teams trailing FC Cincinnati shows how close this playoff push is. Toronto also has 36 points, but FCC has more wins, Columbus with 35, New York City FC with 34, D.C. United has 33, and Atlanta United with 30. So to say this is close, it's very close and dangerously so. There isn't much of a margin to deal with here. So, the team needs to understand the ramifications and develop a sense of urgency if they want to make the playoffs.

Right now, what FC Cincinnati needs to do is change a lot with their approach and tactics and buckle down. Urgency has to be there. If the club misses the playoffs then changes have to be made and major ones. This push for the playoffs could be altering as to what the team does, but either way, they all need to collect themselves and get down to business.
