A few weeks ago it seemed like the Washington Commanders were destined to not make the playoffs. Now, at 5-5, there is renewed hope in the fanbase. However, there should be even more excitement as the team is within striking distance of a postseason berth and the strength of their schedule looks good for them. While Taylor Heinicke, for now, will man the quarterback position, the hope is that Carson Wentz, who is recovering from an injury, will be able to showcase his high upside and work that into his play if he ever takes over again. Wentz hasn’t been very good this season, but maybe this injury was a blessing in disguise for him. The Commanders have won four of their last five including against division rival Philadelphia Eagles who were unbeaten at the time and that should give a lot of hope to fans. Let’s take a look at their upcoming schedule:
Houston
Atlanta
New York Giants (back-to-back)
San Francisco
Cleveland
Dallas
Crazy thing is that Washington could have easily been 6-4 had they not blown the lead against Minnesota. But honestly, this looks like a pretty easy schedule despite the records for a couple of these sides. Houston is 1-7-1, Atlanta is 4-6, and Cleveland is 3-6. Those are three winnable games. The contest against San Francisco is away and that is going to be difficult no matter what, but Jimmy Garoppolo is not a highly regarded quarterback and is absolutely beatable. So it could be a steal of a win. Dallas might be talented, but with this game at home, anything can happen and the Cowboys have shown a lot of flaws especially with Dak Prescott back. New York’s record is a bit deceptive as they have gotten lucky in a lot of their victories and they are not more talented than the Commanders.
This Washington team is too talented to miss the playoffs. They’re also getting healthier as Chase Young looks to come back soon from his ACL injury from last season. It’s also nice to see what the offense is capable of now that Brian Robinson is back allowing both him and Antonio Gibson to play to their strengths. Terry McLaurin is finally getting involved in the offense and Curtis Samuel is showing what he can do when healthy. So the postseason is a very realistic possibility.
