Capitals Waive And Retain Christian Djoos, Pheonix Copley, Michael Sgarbossa, and Liam O'Brien

The Capitals waived Christian Djoos, Pheonix Copley, Michael Sgarbossa, and Liam O'Brien and sent them down to Hershey in the AHL to complete their roster. These were four players who were on the fence on making the roster and ultimately the team felt like these four were best suited as depth. Ultimately, the Capitals felt like some young prospects like goalie Ilya Samsonov and defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler were best for the team.

Djoos has been one of the key members to help the Capitals win the Stanley Cup in 2018, but despite playing well in 2018-19, the team decided to go another route. His performance in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs was not very good, but whether that factored into the decision is unknown. Copley had been a backup goalie for the Capitals in the 2018-19 season, but the team felt like that he is depth and should get more playing time in Hershey. Sgarbossa and O'Brien are on two-way contracts, so it was no shock to see them be sent down as they are depth.
