The Washington Capitals have announced that they have signed goalie Craig Anderson to a professional tryout agreement. This move was made after the news that Henrik Lundqvist would miss the season due to a heart condition (and will have open heart surgery). Anderson is a 39 year old veteran player who has played 648 games. Last year with Ottawa he went 11-17-2 with a .902 save percentage and a 3.25 goals against average in 34 games. However, the numbers that should be looked at is that Anderson posted a .918 save percentage, a 2.71 goals-against average, a -0.99 goals-saved above average, and a .827 high-danger save percentage at five-on-five last season. His career playoff numbers might be helpful as in 46 games, Anderson is 23-22 with a .929 save percentage, a 2.35 goals-against average, and four shutouts. He is expected to compete for a backup position, but having a veteran goalie like him will be useful for the development of Ilya Samsonov.
