Capitals Make Four Selections At 2019 NHL Draft

The Capitals made four draft picks in this past NHL Draft as they selected center Connor McMichael, right wing Brett Leason, center Aliaksei Protas, and defenseman Martin Has.

In the first round, the Capitals selected McMichael as the 25th selection overall.

McMichael had been playing for the OHL team London Knights. With the Knights, he scored 36 goals, recorded 36 assists, 72 points and had a +15 rating in the 67 games he played at London. They also signed him to a three-year entry-level contract for an annual salary of $832,500 and includes a $92,500 bonus signing for each of those three years. McMichael is described by NBC Sports Network as a “Swiss Army Knife” as he is very versatile and he could be top-six player for the team very soon.

In the second round, with the 56th overall pick, the Capitals selected Leason. Leason had played for the Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL. Leason had scored 36 goals, recorded 47 assists, 83 points, and had a +55 rating in 54 games played last season. The team signed him to a three year entry level contract worth $750,000 annually plus a $92,500 bonus signing per season.

In the third round, with the 91st overall pick, the Capitals selected Protas. Like Leason, Protas had played for the Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL. In 61 games, Protas scored 11 goals, recorded 29 assists, 40 points, and had a +24 rating. The team signed him to a three-year entry level contract with an annual salary of $716,666.

In the fifth round, with the 153rd overall pick, the Capitals selected Has. Has spent time in Finland with Tappara U20 of the Jr. A SM-liiga. For them, he scored nine goals, recorded seven assists, 16 points, and had a -1 rating last season. Has might have been their most underrated pick as he is described as a two-way player. He still has not signed with the team.
