With the announcement that the 2019-20 regular season will end due to the Covid-19 pandemic and a 24-team tournament will occur to end the calendar season, the Capitals have clinched the Metropolitan Division title as they finished one point better than the second place Philadelphia Flyers. This is the team's fifth consecutive division title. They also clinch a first round bye in the tournament. The Capitals now have won 13 division championships in their franchise's history and this will be the 30th postseason appearance in the 45 years.
