Capitals and Nicklas Backstrom Sign Contract Extension

The Washington Capitals and forward Nicklas Backstrom have agreed to a five year, $46 Million contract extension. The contract will be a $9.2 Million cap hit starting in the 2020-21 season. With Backstrom's impending free agency after this season, the team felt like keeping a franchise icon like him for the rest of his career in Washington was the right move.

Some other details in the contract include for three years there is a no trade clause and the last two years is a limited no-trade clause. So essentially in his last two years of his contract, he controls where he can be traded to as that means theres only 15 teams he would approve a trade to. Depending on where the Capitals will be in those final two seasons, a trade does not seem likely.

Backstrom has put up some good numbers thus far this season having scored nine goals and assisted on 26 scores for 35 points in 39 games. He's also been the Capitals most consistent shooter as he ranks first on the team in shot attempt percentage at 52.1%. He has also led the NHL in assists since his debut in 2007. Having been one of the best players in the league since his debut, this was a contract well deserved for Backstrom.
